BROCKVILLE, ON – Michael Barrett, Member of Parliament for Leeds-Grenville-Thousand Islands and Rideau Lakes, announced that Kindness Week Act received Royal Assent on June 3, 2021 to become law in Canada.
Kindness Week Act was brought forward by Senator Jim Munson as a private member’s bill in the Senate of Canada. It was sponsored in the House of Commons by MP Barrett, and Emmanuella Lambropoulos, Member of Parliament for Saint-Laurent, and quickly passed as legislation by Canada’s Parliament.
The inspiration for this bill, Rabbi Reuven Bulka, the founder of Kind Canada, started the first Kindness Week in Ottawa 14 years ago, and with the passing of this bill, Canada is now the first country to have a national Kindness Week.
“Designating kindness week throughout Canada to encourage acts of kindness, voluntarism and charitable giving will benefit all Canadians, and I want to congratulate Senator Munson and Rabbi Bulka for their dedicated efforts on Kindness Week, and to thank MP Lambropoulos for joining me in supporting this private member’s bill in the House of Commons,” said MP Barrett.
Next February 2022 marks the first ever national Kindness Week, and Canadians from coast to coast to coast can celebrate acts of kindness in their communities during the third week of February every year.
“By connecting individuals and organizations to share resources, information, and tools to foster more acts of kindness, it will help lead to the improved health and well-being of Canadians. The opportunity to work together to pass this legislation and bring a national Kindness Week to Canadians is a tremendous honour, and I’m grateful to be a part of this democratic milestone,” added MP Barrett.
